Stage ROI Setup

This document explains how to use Edit Stage ROI Mode (D) to configure the Stage's Region of Interest (ROI).

What is Stage ROI?

Stage ROI (Region of Interest) is an OBB (Oriented Bounding Box) set on the stage. When used with the point cloud's Culling setting, it hides or color-codes points outside the ROI range, allowing you to see only the cross-section you want to draw.

Setting Up ROI

There are two approaches to setting up the ROI.

Approach 1: Define Range from Orthographic View

Since most man-made structures have rectangular floor plans, it is efficient to generate the ROI from a Front or Right orthographic view and then adjust the remaining range.

  1. Go to the Front or Right orthographic view and pan the camera to align the walls you want to draw.
  2. Use Alt++ to drag the desired area including the height range. A new ROI is created in that orthographic direction.
  3. Switch to the other orthographic view (Front ↔ Right), then use + to adjust the width range.
  4. If needed, fine-tune using Edit Mode (A) handles, Move Mode (W), or Rotate Mode (E).

Approach 2: Draw Floor Area Directly

Draw the floor area of the ROI directly from the Top view, then adjust the height.

  1. Press M to enter Rectangle Drawing (M) sub-mode.
  2. Click in the viewport to add vertices and define the ROI floor area on the XY plane.
  3. Go to the Front or Right orthographic view and use + to adjust the height range.
  4. If needed, fine-tune using Edit Mode (A), Move Mode (W), or Rotate Mode (E).

Sub-modes and Other Controls

Idle — Handle Manipulation

ShortcutDescription
AEnter Edit Mode (A) sub-mode

In Edit Mode (A) sub-mode, handles appear on each face of the ROI box in Perspective or Top view. Drag a handle with + to resize along that direction. Useful when you only need to expand or shrink the range in a specific direction.

Move

ShortcutDescription
WEnter Move Mode (W) sub-mode

In Move Mode (W) sub-mode, drag the translate gizmo to reposition the entire ROI.

Rotate

ShortcutDescription
EEnter Rotate Mode (E) sub-mode

In Rotate Mode (E) sub-mode, drag the rotate gizmo to rotate the ROI. Useful when the building is not aligned with the coordinate axes.

Applying Point Cloud Culling

After setting the ROI, enable Culling in the point cloud's Material properties to clean up points outside the ROI. Only the points on the cross-section you want to draw remain clearly visible, making subsequent shape drawing work much smoother.

  • Cull: Fully hides points outside the ROI, letting you focus on the drawing area.
  • Color: Displays points outside the ROI in a separate color, highlighting the drawing area while maintaining visibility of the overall space.
Height Range Tip

Rather than matching the ROI height range exactly to the floor and ceiling surfaces, it is recommended to set it slightly above the floor and slightly below the ceiling. This removes horizontal points from the floor and ceiling, leaving only wall points cleanly extracted for much clearer drawing reference.
